You rely on your automobile’s suspension without even realizing it. This is the vehicle system that helps you control your car, truck, or utility vehicle. John Ellis and Son Auto Repair is going to list the signs of suspension problems below so you know what they are. If you are experiencing any of these problems, stop by our shop so we can inspect your suspension and make any necessary repairs.
A Low-Seated Corner
If one wheel on your automobile is sitting lower than the other three, this is usually an indication that you have a broken suspension spring on that wheel. Check the tire pressure on that tire to make sure it isn’t too low. If it isn’t, the broken suspension spring is likely the culprit. This is especially true if that wheel clunks when you go over bumps.
Feeling All the Bumps
Speaking of bumps, if you feel every bump in the road that you drive over, this is a sign that your shocks and struts are worn down and need to be replaced. The struts and shocks are designed to absorb the bumps in the road so you feel comfortable in your vehicle cabin at all times. Worn struts and shocks cannot absorb the road bumps and, consequently, you end up with a bumpy ride.
Feeling the Momentum Motion
Another thing the struts and shocks do is prevent you from feeling your vehicle’s momentum motion. What this means is your vehicle won’t drive forward when you stop, lean backward when you start, or tilt to the side when you go around corners. If this is happening, you need to replace the struts and shocks.
Oil On the Shock Absorbers
Another sign that your shock absorbers need to be replaced is if they have oil on them. This means that the shock absorbers are leaking, and they have reached the end of their life. If you reach up underneath your rear wheels and touch the shock absorbers, you will be able to feel the oil leaking out of them.
Problems Controlling Your Automobile
Suspension problems also manifest themselves by making it difficult to control your automobile. One thing that can go wrong is a problem with your vehicle’s steering system, which is part of the suspension. If your steering wheel has become nonresponsive, it’s important to have it inspected immediately so you don’t lose control of your automobile.
Your vehicle might also have a suspension problem if the wheels are out of alignment. When this happens, your vehicle will pull to one side and you will have to correct its direction constantly. Usually, realigning the wheels solves the problem.
