Why Are My Car’s Headlights Flickering Constantly?

If your car’s headlights have started to flicker constantly, John Ellis & Son advises that it’s time to replace the alternator. Headlights that flicker, are too dim, or are too bright are an indication that the alternator is malfunctioning. You will also notice the same problems with your taillights and interior lights. This is just one sign that the alternator is going bad. Here are the other signs.

Battery Warning Light on the Dashboard

Speaking of lights, you may end up with the battery warning light on the dashboard. This light is in the shape of a battery and signals a problem with the alternator or the battery. Older automobiles tend to have their engine control modules turn on the ALT or GEN light when there is alternator trouble.

Burning Wire or Burning Rubber Odors

The alternator is the electrical system part that produces voltage. The maximum voltage it should produce is 14.5 volts. If it produces more voltage than this, you may smell burning wire or burning rubber odors coming from the engine. This is a sign that the electrical system is too hot.

Grinding, Growling, or Whining Noises

As the alternator starts to go bad, it will grind or growl. These noises will come from the engine, but they are actually coming from the alternator in the engine. You might also hear squealing or whining coming from the engine if the alternator belt is too loose and needs to be tightened.

Malfunctioning or Slow Accessories

As we mentioned above, the alternator produces electricity. It uses this electricity to provide power to your vehicle’s power accessories. If the alternator is unable to produce enough power for the accessories, they may slow down or malfunction. They may stop completely if they aren’t getting any power.

Starting Difficulties/Dead Battery

The alternator is also in charge of ensuring that the battery always holds a charge. If the alternator is having problems keeping the battery charged, you will have starting difficulties with your automobile. Even jump-starting the battery will not keep the battery charged because the alternator is dying.

The Engine Is Stalling Frequently

Finally, your engine may begin to stall frequently if the alternator is not providing enough power to the spark plugs so they fire correctly. If your engine starts to misfire, i.e., sputter, and then stalls, this could be a sign that the spark plugs are not getting the power they need from the alternator.

Call John Ellis & Son in Sacramento, CA, today to schedule a service appointment for your automobile so we can test the alternator and replace it if necessary.
